We're only hours into the New Year, and many people have been, or are, working on yearly goals. Getting a promotion, losing weight, or securing a new job are common aspirations. But have you thought about what should be prioritized above goals: Seeking first the kingdom of Heaven? That should be the priority every time, in every circumstance, and every consideration.
"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give everything you need," Matthew 6:33 (NLT).
Secular productivity experts won't mention God as they instruct us in making goals or resolutions. They will tell us how to better manage our time, delegate tasks, and get up earlier so we have more work hours. While these may be good strategies, do they put God first?
What about time to pray, read the Bible, or serve others?
It reminds me of the parable in Luke 12:20 where the rich farmer planned to tear down his barns to erect bigger ones, eat, drink, and be merry. So much for worldly
plans. "God said to him, you fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you've worked for."
God created work, which is why Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15). Therefore, we must rely on God to set our directions and priorities for work and everything else.
